A mobile WLAN router is a compact device that establishes a cellular connection (LTE or 5G) and shares it as a local WLAN for multiple end devices. The differences lie in the technology: current LTE routers in categories Cat 12 to Cat 20 reach a theoretical 600 Mbit/s to 2 Gbit/s, while 5G devices (sub-6 GHz) go beyond that; 5G RedCap is also establishing itself as an efficient device class for router and IoT applications. Many models offer long battery life for all-day use plus built-in security functions such as VPN and firewall.

For professional use, two things matter that consumer devices rarely offer: dual-SIM and multi-carrier failover – the router automatically switches between Telekom, Vodafone and O2 when one network weakens – and the antenna question: in buildings, vehicles or on construction sites, an external antenna (for example from Poynting) determines stable reception.
